Land of Hearts, Love and Heartland...and Thursday Quotables, what :)

8/30/12 - Day Eighty Eight

Been a bit since I got to update. I have fallen in love with this song and the t.v. show it is attached to.  If you have never had the chance to watch Heartland on GMC in the US....you should! It is a show that doesn't need all the sex and drugs to be great! The actors are fantastic and I can't wait for the new season to start in Canada on Sept 16th.  It takes a bit for the new episodes to get on GMC but it is worth the wait.

Realization: Working hard is hard work but without it I just have work, and who needs that.

My new job is amazing.  I love the team and being a good addition to it.  I have recently been asked why I feel the need to work so hard at whatever I am trying to accomplish and for me the answer is if I don't what's the point all together?

Check out this quote:

7/7/2012 -Day Eighty Seven

As changes linger
The fear grips my conciousness
Unknown is worst than unstable most days
Progress takes progression

Each step has purpose
Is that purpose failure?
Lessons learned come from failure and success
For without failure who really know success

Let it be for it will anyways
Let it be to rest
Let it be for spontaneous can't come from control
Let it be for sleep

The thoughts of the recent changes in my life. Friday is my last day at Starbucks and the beginning of my career as cafe manager at Barnes and Noble. I will miss the team I have worked so closely with and hopefully we will all stay in touch.

I think a part of me never thought this day would actually come.  I have completed all of my course work for a B.A. in Visual Communications.  The stress has literally fallen off. So many keep asking what is next and here is what I have come up with so far.

Organize and clean my apartment
Create baby shower invitations for a friend
Rebrand my neighbor's concrete company logo
Take a camping vacation to the mountains in Georgia
Continue the great work with Mosaic
Become more acquainted with 99designs.com and Fiverr.com
and their is always Starbucks <3

3/21/12 - Day Eighty Four

I have been asked several times recently what my favorite this or that is.  My answer is generally I really don't know or too many to really tell.  I think everyone should have a "favorite" movie or song and so over the next few posts I am going to try and come up with a small list of favorites.

Favorite Color: Red
eye catching and intense
Favorite Country Song: Trisha Yearwood - She's in Love with the Boy
memories of my mom and sister
Favorite Rock Song: Breaking Benjamin - Dear Agony
the song that inspired my tattoo
Favorite Blues Song: Hugh Laurie - Let them Talk
wow I want a beer with this song :)
Favorite Soft Rock: Grace Potter & The Nocturnals - Apologies
my song for any emotion
Favorite Punk Song: Straylight Run - Existentialism on Prom Night
age 17-20 with the best friends ever

I would love to see a website with the lists of random peoples favorites and the reasons why.  Having a reason why it is so liked generally gives me a better perspective.

3/8/12 - Day Eighty Two

Thursday's Quotables ninth edition
The best advice can be found in quotes from those that learned before us.

Design is the search for a magical balance between business and art; art and craft; intuition and reason; concept and detail; playfulness and formality; client and designer; designer and printer; and printer and public.— Valerie Pettis

Good design is a lot like clear thinking made visual.— Edward Tufte

Design is about making things good (and then better) and right (and fantastic) for the people who use and encounter them.— Matt Beale

Art is like masturbation. It is selfish and introverted and done for you and you alone. Design is like sex. There is someone else involved, their needs are just as important as your own, and if everything goes right, both parties are happy in the end.— Colin Wright

Ahh...married people

3/6/12 - Day Eighty One

Music: Paul McDonald & Nikki Reed - Now that I found you.

Really pretty song.  I like the vocals the most.  There is a very romantic feel to it with the knowledge they are married in real life.

Realization: I work hard for me.

Some work for the appreciation of others.  While this is a bonus to be sure.  I can't leave a job I know I agreed to do half assed. The feeling that I did a good job is the most important part, for me.

Inspiration: Creative Writing Day 1

Over the next three days I will be posting my three creative writing assignments this term.  I am very proud of them but would love to hear your thoughts.

Still Moments
by Jennie Libby

The first morning thought
beauty created in warm covers
The pinging sound
sideways rain on windows

The mood
a good book; peaceful
The smell
a caramel rich espresso

The person
relief at working day’s end
The time
colors to start and end a day
The feeling
a hug that lasts and lasts
The song
that resonates a feeling

The sleepless night
when truths are revealed
The red light
reminiscing about the past

The empty dinner table
good flavor realized
The handheld mirror
reflect in reflections

The bubble bath
the popping sound of bubbles as the stress vanishes
The employment break
evil laced in happiness and cancerous smoke

The movie theater
fantasy come to life
The fishing boat
when waiting is welcomed

The long hike
listening for the smallest rustles
The still moments
may we all have more

An Extra Day

2/29/12 - Day Seventy Nine

Music: The Pretty Reckless - You

Some new music I found through the YouTube suggestion section of my homepage.  This is one of the few I actually like a lot. Check it out.

Realization: We should have an extra day every year.

I have recently been talking so much about time and how little of it I seem to have.  This may be the start to the extremely busy part of my life and I am ready for it.

The last two days I literally didn't have a moment to blog.  Weird.  This has taught me that realistically I won't be able to blog everyday but I am still going to write for no less than 365 days total.

Some updates on some of my goals and the important parts of my life

I am working in the design field currently as a freelance designer.

Wait or Do

2/24/12 - Day Seventy Six

Inspiration: Good things come to those that wait, better things come to those that do.

I have been considering moving away from the area I currently live in for quite some time.  Culturally this isn't a good spot for a budding design career and I need a change.  I know a new city isn't going to fix everything but I am hoping it would help with some different scenery. The top three choices on the move list are Seattle or Portland, Denver or somewhere on the east coast though Boston and New York are the only really likely choices.  I would love to live closer to my sister in Charlotte, NC but I am not sure that would be exactly the change I am looking for since it isn't a huge difference from Florida.  These decisions will be weighing heavily on my mind over the next couple of weeks.  Thankfully, I have the support of my boyfriend in these discussions and concerns so hopefully we can make a good decision.

2/22/12 - Day Seventy Four

Realization: The only motivation I need is work

My mind has been crazy a buzz with all the designs in my head.  When given an idea I can create exactly what the consumer wants with some communication.  The confidence of knowing is helping me achieve some personal goals and I am ready for the next step.

Music: Jem - They

This song has been playing at Starbucks the last few days, and it is amazing to work to.  I like the lyrics because they channel some key moments in my past but the beat will get you moving.  It is great!

Quiet Time

2/17/12 - Day Sixty Nine

What music speaks to you?  Which ones are your absolute favorites?  I have so many it is hard to think of the right ones on the right days.

Music: Brand New - Quiet Things No One Knows

This is my favorite type of music.  I can design, sleep or mellow out to it.  It can repeat over and over and I just keep singing it.

Realization: Quiet time awakens demons and inspiration.

Last night, while trying to fall asleep early for a well needed change, I had more than a few moments of meditation.  Sure...some things that flew into my thought processes weren't happy or even something I could do anything about but I needed that time to just THINK.  Each day we are faced with almost an assault of information and entertainment that holds our attention.

We get very little time to just be silent in thought and purpose.  In the past when I would try to be quiet or meditate on anything the boredom was overwhelming.  I am realizing now that each of us needs time to just be, to shut off our brains or focus on the larger picture.  Our everyday can turn into a month without even realizing we lost a day.

A new small term goal for myself is to try and enjoy and create those quiet moments more in my life.

Realization: I want a week away from everything.

I started thinking today how nice it would be to rent a cabin in the middle of nowhere and just exist for a week. No distractions, or phones or schoolwork or work.  Change is a necessity in my life and I need it soon.  Lots of thinking in my brain today and I hope these changes are coming soon.

Love is....forgetfulness

2/5/12 - Day Fifty Seven

Music: Atlantic Starr - Always

When I was seven my mom remarried and he became my dad that day.  This was their wedding song and I still picture my best friend, sister and I singing at the top of our lungs beside the dance floor during their first song.  Wonderful memories and a great love song that reminds us true love is always!

Realization: To be truly in love a bad memory is key.

The hardest thing to remember in love is we aren't in love with a concept, we are in love with another person.  People will make mistakes, big ones and small ones.  Forgiving someone you love seems to be the easy part it is forgetting the mistakes that takes effort.  The ability to not bring up shortcomings at the first sight of personal insecurities.  Forget the bad and pray your loved one can do the same for you.

Love is...who you sleep next to, by choice

2/4/12 - Day Fifty Six

Music: Al Green - Let's Stay Together

This song makes me miss my boyfriend or reach out and hug him.  Definitely one of the best songs of all time. Play it in the middle of an argument and it is sure to cease.

Realization: There is so much I could do with a sewing machine.

For some reason I have never tried sewing as a hobby.  I guess in my mind it has always been associated with my grandmother and her patience for it. Patience I never thought I could possess. Much to my surprise, my patience for projects that create something is increasing with age.  Crocheting is one of most relaxing things currently in my world.  Just to focus on something and get lost with little to no hard thought or decisions put into it. When the most in depth thought is do I want a hole here or just a solid line, weights are lifted.

Inspiration: Pillows in red!

I love these, especially the LOVE pillow in the back!  Blogging has helped me see there is so much you can do with a design background.  It just takes time and some funds. Here is the blog I found this great design on.  Check it out!

Music: Etta James - At Last

By far one of the best love songs of all time.  The music is amazing to dance to and the lyrics make perfect sense to anyone who finally found a special someone.

Inspiration: Valentine's Day

Things to see

2/1/12 - Day Fifty Three

Music: Flight of the Conchords - Business Time

Amazing song!  Hilarious and so true!

Realization: My reasons to work have almost nothing to do with rent and food.

I always hear someone say they want to travel. I have been saying it since I was about thirteen. Then I realized the want to travel is much deeper for me than most of my acquaintances.  I go to work everyday so I can have the opportunity to travel someday soon.  Sure working provides the necessities in life sure but those seem to be there when you need them. Today I found these great articles with just a few of the beautiful places on earth to visit.

Music: Pearl Jam - Just Breathe

This song has made an appearance in so many places in my life but I never knew exactly what the song was until tonight.  It was some background music in a Castle episode we were watching.  Amazing song! Check it out.

Realization: The calm prepares you for the rough spots in life

At the core optimism is my thought process, but lately I have been bracing for the bad that seems to always follow a calm spot in life.  My pessimist side...then I realized bracing for the bad doesn't help you live in the moment it just keeps you looking to what is next.  This cycle seems to reoccurring not just in my life but those around me too.  If is normal, then these calm spots if truly calm and enjoyed create the strength and pizazz needed to get through the roughness of life.

Women's Award Show Fashion 2012

1/30/12 - Day Fifty One

Inspiration: Fashion Design

Every year the award show seasons bringing on the inevitable question... was that a good or bad fashion choice?  Below are my favorite designs from the shows so far.

2012 Golden Globes

Design: Dior Couture - worn by Charlize Theron

I love the nod to the 1920's from this entire look.  The pale color highlights her beautiful skin tone and even the styling including the jewelry makes this an overall winner for the evening.

2012 People's Choice Awards
Design: Elie Saab - worn by Nina Dobrev

The color and shape of this dress made it my favorite for this awards show.  The lace sleeves with extended length give it just the right "formal" touch needed for the event.

2012 Screen Actor's Guild Awards

Design: Carolina Herrera - worn by Dianna Agron

The chiffon material with a light ruffle at the bust line flowing to the waist make this dress a beautiful shape.  The pink color isn't too bright and compliments her skin tone nicely.  I love the entire look for dress including the braided up-do for her hair...Love it!

1/27/12 - Day Forty Eight

Realization: Money doesn't buy happiness but it helps - by someone famous for saying it :)

Today was payday and for me like so many others currently it was a day of overwhelming frustration instead of joy.  Getting paid every two weeks is great because it gives you the chance to pay all the bills twice a month...well great when the family income matches the bills.  On my way to work currently and to get this frustration out of my head I have to add to the above realization.

At least I can pay my bills.  Someone out there always has it worse than me.  So, today I will stop complaining and enjoy this day without money.  I wonder what troubles I can get into...

Will write more after this Castle episode but ever get the crazy notion the neighbors upstairs are recreating the scene where the pins at the end of a bowling lane fall over.  Instead of throwing a ball down the lane they are simply jumping up and down to make them tumble?   Living downstairs creates a million different fabulous ideas.

Who's Way?

1/21/12 - Day Forty Two

Ever been in a place where you are tired of trying and feel extremely frustrated?  That was the general tone of my day today.  I got a lot accomplished and the people around me helped but it was just a nails on chalkboard day.

Music: Three Days Grace - Let It Die

This song is about the end of a relationship.  When you are in the dark place where you just don't care anymore.  This song actually calms me down.  Being over-analyzer is easy when you don't care what your analyzing. Anyways give it a listen the lyrics are awesome.

Realization: Work pays you to do it their way.  It doesn't matter if you like it or not.

This realization is a two part discovery for me.  Firstly, as an employee that likes things to remain the same and be done a certain way. A correction in the way things are can make me irritated beyond belief. In the end however professionalism and a yielding to my profession of choice is always my course.  The second part of this realization is as a supervisor.  I understand the frustration people feel but from the viewpoint of someone getting paid to uphold policy it doesn't matter either.  A job pays you to accomplish certain tasks their way and with certain restrictions.  Thanks for listening to my rant I feel so much better.

Poetry & Design

1/20/12 - Day Forty One

Music: Straylight Run - Mistakes We Knew We Were Making

"So we bottled and shelved all our regrets,
Let them ferment and came back to our senses,
Drove back home and slept a few days,
Woke up and laughed at how stupid we used to be,"

Realization: Visualization is necessary for my writer side to emerge.

This week I was tasked with creating two different literary pieces for my Creative Writing class. In my head the design was pictured long before I had the words to go with it.  I still have to write one piece and I'm going to use the character I created last week and showed you guys in my weekly collage.  Hopefully this piece can be a play.  Never tried it before so if nothing else it will be fun.  Below is the artistic piece I envisioned to help me create the words.

A Day in Protest

1/18/12 Day Thirty Nine

The biggest news on the horizon today. I am proud of the protest set forth by Americans.  It is nice to see people coming together even when it feels like we have very little say in Washington.

I can't imagine the internet with blocked websites from the federal government.  It would feel like I was living in a third world country.  I don't want copyright infringements to put corporations out of business but where does fair use and violation differ?  In my opinion Corporate America has tried more than once now to get the federal government to come to its defense with issues that shouldn't be their concern.

Realization: This is what happens when you sleep from night time to night time.

On the plus side, I am recovering from this yukky cold quickly.  Bought some great black and grey yarn today to start creating a scarf for the rest of the winter.  It just got cold here in the middle of January, gotta love Florida weather.

Inspiration: Started writing a short story today as well as a poem.  I'll post by the end of the week once I complete them.

Music: Something Corporate - Me and the Moon

This song talks about suicide.  I have thought about it, and thankfully never could actually do it.  Whether you are like me or someone that has tried it, almost everyone knows someone who has attempted suicide.  I posted this song because in line with the title of today's post I have found that people that make it through such thoughts attempts or sadness with friends appreciate life in an entirely different way.

Realization: Our best colors show in the dark parts of life.

Life has it's way of handing us challenges we couldn't even think up.  Whether it is the death of a loved one, a break in trust, health problems or family responsibilities. These challenges shape who we will be.  In my life and in the stories I enjoy the best people have been through one or more of the above.  They aren't forever beaten down by but face the challenges in uniquely incredible ways. Whether they come out of the darkness a blue shade of calm or just facing the yellow sun one day at a time they are an inspiration to me.

Working Sick Sucks!

1/13/12 - Day Thirty Four

Was super great on the way to work.  Then came down with the start to an awful flu.  Scratching voice, aches and all other sorts of ickiness. Pushed through it though and closed Starbucks beautifully.  Out late but our DM should be proud tomorrow.  Back on track posting later today needed to let go of the stress.

Thursday's Quotables

1/12/12 - Day Thirty Three

Thursday's Quotables first edition

The best advice can be found in quotes from those that learned before us.

Inspiration: Katharine Houghton Hepburn (May 12, 1907 – June 29, 2003)

"Life is to be lived. If you have to support yourself, you had bloody well better find some way that is going to be interesting. And you don't do that by sitting around wondering about yourself." - Katharine Hepburn

"...We are taught you must blame your father, your sisters, your brothers, the school, the teachers - you can blame anyone, but never blame yourself.  It's never your fault. But it's ALWAYS your fault, because if you wanted to change, you're the one who has got to change. It's as simple as that, isn't it?" - Katharine Hepburn

"If you obey all the rules you miss all the fun." - Katharine Hepburn

"Sometimes I wonder if men and women really suit each other. Perhaps they should live next door and just visit now and then." - Katharine Hepburn
